DETROIT, Mich. | October 23, 2026
For goaltender Michal Postava, Thursday marked a major milestone in a professional hockey career that has taken him from Czechia to Grand Rapids and now the National Hockey League.
The Detroit Red Wings recalled the 24-year-old netminder from the Grand Rapids Griffins under emergency conditions on October 22.
Hours later, Postava made his NHL debut during Detroit’s 5-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.
What began as an emergency roster move quickly became an opportunity for one of the Griffins’ most promising goaltenders to experience hockey at the sport’s highest level.
An Unexpected Opportunity
Detroit announced Postava’s recall after goaltender Daniil Tarasov sustained an undisclosed injury.
Postava was initially expected to serve as a backup during the Red Wings’ game in Vancouver.
However, starting goaltender John Gibson did not return for the third period because of an upper-body issue, creating an unexpected opportunity.
Postava entered the game in relief and recorded seven saves as Detroit secured the victory.
For a young goaltender who had spent the beginning of the season in the American Hockey League, the appearance represented an important career achievement.
Dominating in Grand Rapids
Postava’s promotion followed an impressive opening stretch with the Griffins.
Through four starts in the 2026-27 AHL season, he had compiled a perfect 4-0-0 record, a 1.25 goals-against average, and a .954 save percentage.
Those numbers continued the momentum he established during the previous season.
In 25 regular-season appearances for Grand Rapids in 2025-26, Postava posted a 17-6-0 record, a 1.71 goals-against average, a .937 save percentage, and four shutouts.
He also shared the AHL’s Harry “Hap” Holmes Memorial Award with fellow Griffins goaltender Sebastian Cossa.
The award recognizes goaltenders associated with the team allowing the fewest goals per game during the regular season, subject to the league’s eligibility requirements.
His success in Grand Rapids helped position him for an opportunity in Detroit.
A Championship Background
Before joining the Red Wings organization, Postava played professionally in Czechia.
During the 2024-25 season, he helped HC Kometa Brno capture the Czech Extraliga championship.
He was also recognized as the league’s playoff most valuable player after a strong postseason performance.
Detroit signed Postava as an undrafted free agent in June 2025.
His transition from European professional hockey to the North American game has been accompanied by impressive results at the AHL level.
Detroit’s Goaltending Situation
Postava’s emergency recall came during a period of roster adjustments for the Red Wings.
Detroit also activated forward J.T. Compher from injured reserve and assigned Sheldon Dries to Grand Rapids.
The goaltending situation became even more complicated when Gibson was unable to finish Thursday’s contest.
Postava’s appearance provided immediate relief while also giving Detroit an opportunity to evaluate a developing player under NHL game conditions.
His performance does not establish a permanent NHL role, but it adds another chapter to his development.
A Significant Moment for the Griffins
Postava’s debut also highlights the importance of Grand Rapids within the Red Wings’ player-development system.
The Griffins provide young players with opportunities to develop professionally while preparing for potential NHL assignments.
For Postava, strong AHL performances translated into an opportunity that arrived with little warning.
His debut serves as another example of how quickly circumstances can change for players working toward an NHL career.
Detroit’s victory extended its point streak to six games, adding a positive team result to Postava’s milestone night.
The Red Wings continue their road trip Saturday against the Calgary Flames.
For Postava, the question now becomes what opportunities may follow his first appearance in a Detroit uniform.
