EAST LANSING, Mich. | October 23, 2026
The final weekend of Michigan’s high school football regular season has arrived, bringing playoff implications for programs across the state.
With the 2026 Michigan High School Athletic Association postseason approaching, teams will soon learn whether their regular-season performances have earned them a place in the state tournament.
The MHSAA will announce playoff qualifiers and opening-round matchups during its annual Selection Sunday Show on October 25 at 5 p.m. Eastern.
For players, coaches, and communities throughout Michigan, the announcement will determine which teams continue their seasons and which programs begin preparing for next year.
The Road to Selection Sunday
Michigan’s football playoff system uses playoff-point averages to determine postseason qualification.
According to the MHSAA, the top 32 teams by playoff-point average in each 11-player division will qualify.
Eight-player football divisions will each include the top 16 qualifying teams.
The divisions were established before the season began, providing schools with their classification while leaving qualification to regular-season performance.
This system makes the final standings and playoff-point calculations especially important as the regular season concludes.
Regional Programs Await Their Fate
Across southwest and west Michigan, communities including Marshall, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Jackson, and Grand Rapids are preparing for the postseason announcement.
The final regular-season games offer teams an opportunity to strengthen their playoff résumés or finish their seasons with momentum.
However, a winning record alone does not guarantee qualification.
The MHSAA’s playoff-point formula determines the final field, making official calculations essential when discussing postseason possibilities.
For that reason, no school should be described as officially qualified until the association confirms the tournament field.
Opening Weekend Set for October 30–31
Once the playoff field is announced, the focus will immediately turn to first-round competition.
Both the 11-player and eight-player tournaments begin October 30–31.
The eight-player state finals are scheduled for November 21 at Northern Michigan University’s Superior Dome.
The 11-player championships will conclude November 27–28 at Ford Field in Detroit.
Between the opening round and championship weekend, teams must navigate a postseason that rewards consistency, preparation, and the ability to perform under pressure.
A Defining Moment for Seniors
For graduating players, the final regular-season weekend carries particular significance.
Some will receive an opportunity to continue competing in the state tournament. Others will play their final high school football games.
Beyond wins and losses, the conclusion of the regular season marks the end of months of preparation, practices, and competition.
The postseason also brings increased attention to smaller communities, where a deep tournament run can become a lasting part of a school’s athletic history.
What Happens Next?
The MHSAA Selection Sunday Show will stream October 25 at 5 p.m. on the NFHS Network.
The association says the broadcast can be watched without a paid subscription, although viewers must register.
Official playoff pairings will be posted after the announcement, with specific game dates and times expected to be added Monday, October 26.
Final Score 360 will continue monitoring confirmed regional qualifiers, first-round matchups, and postseason results as Michigan’s championship race gets underway.
