INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. | October 23, 2026
The road to Lucas Oil Stadium begins Friday night as Indiana high school football teams enter the opening round of the 2026 IHSAA State Tournament.
After weeks of regular-season competition, the focus now shifts to postseason football, where every game carries the possibility of ending a team’s championship hopes.
Sectional play begins October 23 for Classes 1A through 5A, while Class 6A opens postseason competition October 30.
For programs throughout northeast and central Indiana, the coming weeks will determine which teams can turn a successful regular season into a deep playoff run.
A New Season Begins
The Indiana High School Athletic Association conducted its tournament pairings announcement on October 11, establishing the postseason brackets across all six classifications.
Teams in Classes 1A through 5A begin the sectional schedule Friday, although individual brackets may include byes.
Class 6A teams receive an additional week before their postseason begins.
Sectional competition continues October 30, with championships scheduled for November 6.
Regional championships follow November 13, with semi-state contests November 20.
The state championship games are scheduled for November 27–28.
Northeast Indiana Takes Center Stage
The Fort Wayne region once again features numerous programs competing across different classifications.
In Class 5A, Sectional 11 includes Fort Wayne Snider, Fort Wayne South Side, Fort Wayne Wayne, and Warsaw Community.
Class 4A Sectional 19 features Columbia City, DeKalb, East Noble, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, Fort Wayne North Side, Leo, New Haven, and Wawasee.
Nearby programs in smaller classifications also enter the postseason with opportunities to build memorable tournament runs.
For local communities, sectional football brings together familiar opponents, longstanding rivalries, and the excitement of elimination games.
Central Indiana’s Championship Expectations
Indianapolis-area programs will also be closely watched as postseason competition develops.
Class 6A includes several of the state’s prominent large-school programs, including Carmel, Fishers, Hamilton Southeastern, Westfield, Avon, Ben Davis, Brownsburg, and Center Grove.
Their sectional assignments establish potential postseason paths, although teams must earn advancement on the field.
The different starting dates across classifications also create an unusual opening weekend, with some teams playing immediately while others continue preparing for their first tournament matchup.
The Stakes Rise Every Friday
Unlike the regular season, the tournament leaves no opportunity to recover from a loss.
Coaches must balance established game plans with adjustments designed for familiar opponents and postseason pressure.
Turnovers, field position, special teams, and late-game execution can make the difference between advancing and heading into the offseason.
For players, especially seniors, the significance extends beyond the scoreboard. Every postseason game offers another chance to continue representing their school and community.
The Road to Indianapolis
The championship destination remains Lucas Oil Stadium, where the final 12 teams will compete for state titles over Thanksgiving weekend.
Between now and then, hundreds of players and coaches will experience the intensity that makes Indiana high school postseason football a defining part of the fall sports calendar.
Final Score 360 will continue following verified regional tournament results, significant matchups, and the teams advancing toward state championship weekend.
