Tyler Reddick returns to Victory Lane with a daring late-race move while Kyle Larson’s championship advantage nearly disappears at Phoenix Raceway.
AVONDALE, Ariz. | October 18, 2026 — Tyler Reddick delivered one of the most important victories of his NASCAR Cup Series season Sunday afternoon, winning the Freeway Insurance 500 at Phoenix Raceway as the championship battle tightened dramatically.
Driving the No. 45 Toyota for 23XI Racing, Reddick used an aggressive two-tire strategy and a daring four-wide move following a late restart to take control of the race.
He passed Chase Briscoe with 18 laps remaining and pulled away to defeat Ryan Blaney by just 0.801 seconds.
The victory was Reddick’s sixth of the 2026 season, his first at Phoenix Raceway and the 14th Cup Series win of his career.
A Bold Strategy Pays Off
Reddick’s path to Victory Lane required patience, pit strategy and an opportunity at exactly the right moment.
After starting sixth, Reddick remained competitive throughout the 312-lap event but did not emerge as the decisive contender until the closing stages.
A late caution opened the door for teams to make different tire decisions.
Reddick’s crew elected to change only two tires on the final stop, prioritizing track position over the additional grip offered by four fresh tires.
The gamble paid off.
Following the restart, Reddick found an opening in traffic and surged forward. His decisive move allowed him to overtake Briscoe and take the lead with 18 laps remaining.
Once out front, Reddick never surrendered the position.
His victory also ended a 23-race winless streak dating back to April.
Larson’s Championship Lead Nearly Disappears
While Reddick celebrated, Kyle Larson experienced one of his most disappointing races of the season.
Larson entered Phoenix holding a commanding 49-point lead over Denny Hamlin in the NASCAR Cup Series championship standings.
However, the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet struggled with speed throughout the afternoon.
The situation deteriorated dramatically on Lap 283 when Larson suffered a tire failure in Turn 1 and crashed into the outside wall.
Unable to continue, Larson was credited with a 34th-place finish.
The result transformed the championship picture.
Christopher Bell finished fourth and reduced Larson’s points advantage to just five points with three races remaining.
A championship battle that appeared to be moving firmly in Larson’s direction is suddenly wide open.
Blaney, Elliott and Bell Finish Strong
Ryan Blaney, who started from the pole position, finished second after leading 51 laps.
Chase Elliott completed the podium in third, followed by Christopher Bell in fourth and Corey Heim in fifth.
Joey Logano finished sixth after winning both opening stages and leading 84 laps.
Daniel Suárez placed seventh, Briscoe finished eighth, Ross Chastain took ninth and Ty Gibbs rounded out the top ten.
Briscoe appeared positioned to challenge for the victory before Reddick’s late surge changed the outcome.
For Bell, the fourth-place finish proved especially valuable as he gained significant ground in the championship standings.
Championship Battle Tightens
Phoenix was the seventh event in NASCAR’s 10-race Chase championship format.
With only three races remaining, the championship remains unsettled.
Larson continues to lead the standings, but Bell now trails by only five points.
Blaney sits 40 points behind Larson, while Logano trails by 44.
The shrinking gaps mean that one strong performance, mechanical failure or late-race incident could dramatically alter the championship order.
Phoenix demonstrated just how quickly an apparently comfortable advantage can disappear.
Next Stop: Talladega
The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, October 25, for the YellaWood 500.
The 500-mile event begins at 2 p.m. Eastern and will be televised on NBC.
Talladega’s high-speed drafting and unpredictable pack racing present a very different challenge from Phoenix’s one-mile oval.
For Larson, the priority will be protecting his narrow points lead.
For Bell, Blaney, Logano and the other championship contenders, Talladega represents an opportunity to make another major move.
And for Reddick, Phoenix was a reminder that a perfectly timed strategy can change everything.
With three races remaining, the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series championship battle is far from decided.
